PREFACE

The Subtle Technologies Festival began nine years ago to foster communication between artists and scientists. Each year practitioners and thinkers from diverse backgrounds have gathered to share ideas and explore work in progress. The tradition continues with this year’s theme of Responsive Architectures.

We acknowledge generous ongoing support from many individuals and organizations for Subtle Technologies. The Toronto-wide event soundaXis, inspired by the work of renowned architect-composer lannis Xenakis, was instrumental in developing this theme. The Canada Design Research Network introduced design research as a focus. The festival workshop and programming was developed in collaboration with partner institutions University of Toronto Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design and the University of Waterloo School of Architecture at Cambridge. Exhibitions were developed in partnership with InterAccess Media Arts Centre. Initiatives for expanded dissemination of the 2006
Festival include this publication produced as an inaugural edition of the Riverside Architectural Press, and video streaming archives produced for Architecture Radio.

We acknowledge generous financial support from the following organizations:
Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Canadian Heritage, Bentley Systems Inc. Canada Design Research Network, Arriscraft Corporation.
