Who We Are

Subtle Technologies is an annual events program providing a platform for public conversation and community-building at the subtle intersections of art, science and technology. We are a not-for-profit organization, with operational funds under the Media Art sections of the Toronto, Ontario and Canada arts councils.

Subtle Tech was founded in 1998 on a principle to build an ethos of sharing and a sense of community amongst the arts, hard sciences and technology development. Over the last 20 years, the organization has matured yet remained nimble to the zeitgeist by way of its small-scale operations, committed members, board and staff. Subtle Tech serves a diverse audience of participant creators, technological and social innovators. The annual festival aims to direct public attention to emergent practices and build an inclusive community ethic among art, science and technology practitioners. For two decades, Subtle Tech has fostered an active niche community of dedicated audience members, volunteers and committed local Toronto, national and international contributors who have helped to build a program based in core values of generosity and curiosity. The festival program is presented in partnership with individuals, community organizations and institutional partners for creative experimentation.

Subtle Tech is built upon an open source model of dialogue and collaborative exploration. Our presentations are carefully selected for their capacity to generate knowledge and educate through rigorous scientific method and citizen science, poetic and performative public interventions, innovative art exhibitions, and active criticism. Subtle Technologies events support a wide range of interests including social justice and progressive environmental stewardship, the development and promotion of socially and ecologically responsible technology and visual art, and experiments with cooperative learning.
